The Politics of Obstruction

By BJ Bjornson

At some point you almost have to feel sorry for the Republicans. I mean, what are the odds that within weeks of your railing against the waste of spending $900 million on pandemic flu preparation, you would wind up with a potential pandemic flu. Seriously, if I were the type to believe in supernatural beings, I would have to be wondering if said being wasn’t sending somebody a message right about now.

It is also significant to note that the Republicans are helpfully holding up the nomination of Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. After all, we wouldn’t want the department at the forefront of the fight against this possible pandemic to have any kind of leadership, would we?

Playing politics has consequences. Hopefully the American people, who are going to have to bear the consequences of these games, won’t suffer too badly as a result.
