The Wages Of Hate
By Ron Beasley
Fundie wingnut Focus on the Family is being forced to layoff nearly six percent of it's workforce after giving a half a million dollars to the yes on proposition 8 campaign in California.
Focus on the Family announced this afternoon that 202 jobs will be cut companywide, bringing the total number of employees to around 950.
Focus on the Family is poised to announce major layoffs to its Colorado Springs-based ministry and media empire today. The cutbacks come just weeks after the group pumped more than half a million dollars into the successful effort to pass a gay-marriage ban in California.
Critics are holding up the layoffs, which come just two months after the organization’s last round of dismissals, as a sad commentary on the true priorities of ministry.
At least part of the problem is that the religious right just isn't the draw it used to be - donations are down.
At a news conference today, Focus officials said the cuts were made because of a fall in donations. Donations were down for October, the first month of Focus' fiscal year 2009, and officials expect things to get even worse between Thanksgiving and Christmas, which is typically when donations are highest.

The Colorado Springs-based Christian nonprofit's budget also was adjusted downward from $160 million this year to $138 million in 2009.
This is just another indication that the Religious right is loosing the culture war to changing demographics.
You can make life for Dobson and Focus on the Family even more unpleasant by filing a complaint asking the IRS to revoke their tax exempt status.
