More On Khalilzhad Off The Reservation

By Cernig

As promised, I did put some more thoughts down, some speculation about why Khalilzhad - an old hand who knows the rules - broke those rules so blatantly. The post is over at Crooks and Liars. It's possible that Khalilzhad just didn't think the rules applied to him. After all, that belief is common in the Bush administration. But it's also possible that he's got the Afghan presidency in mind. The Indians, who are "risk sensitive" when it comes to relations between themselves, Pakistan and Afghanistan, will have already thought about that - and not be happy people.

"Whoever can speak, speaking now to the whole nation, becomes a power, a branch of government, with inalienable weight in law-making, in all acts of authority. It matters not what rank he has, what revenues or garnitures. The requisite thing is, that he have a tongue which others will listen to; this and nothing more is requisite. The nation is governed by all that has tongue in the nation: Democracy is virtually there."
