Is this really a defense

By Fester:

I need to start drinking in the morning to see how this is an effective conservative defense of the Sarah Palin pick for Vice President.  This is from the American Scene which supports the Palin pick:

I realize, of course, that she’s totally unqualified to be President at this point in time. If McCain were to die in February 2009, I hope Palin would have the good sense to appoint someone who is more ready to be President to be her Vice President, on the understanding that she would then resign and be appointed Vice President by her successor. (Lest anyone say that this is an absurd, unconstitutional or undemocratic scenario, recognize that this is pretty much what would happen in a Parliamentary system where, if the head of government dies, a successor is chosen by the party.) Palin is absolutely not ready to be President now, but that is a problem that is very easily dealt with if she is and the governing party want to do so.

So if we change the form of government, and concede the argument about experience, this is a brilliant pick.....

And this is supposed to be an effective defense of the Palin pick?

I can understand the need for McCain to shore up his social reactionary base as door knocking is hard.  Palin will close some of his door knockers' enthusiasm gap with Obama's door knockers willingness to pound the pavement.  I can understand wanting to secure a Red leaning swing(ish) state.  I don't understand any defense past that.

I don't understand the defense advanced as a bait and switch.  It is just too cold and too contemptous of the American people.  Vote for her, but don't worry, an elder statesman will take her place if she actually needs to do something.  Talk about violating explicit and more importantly implicit norms....

What a bizarre argument. It only makes sense from the point of view of game-play; the prize is the White House and Our Team needs to get it. You're right, Fester, it makes zero sense, not even from the pro-McCain side, if you look at presidential elections as referendums on the future of our country.

She'll probably pick Cheney to head the search commitee

the argument makes perfect sense if you are a republican
